Chapter 10

Lauren and Amanda sat at the table play fighting over the last breakfast sausage. Jared was an incredible chef. She could see why Olivia brought him everywhere they went.

“Bags packed?” Olivia asked as she entered the room. “You fools better be ready to go, because I’m not waiting on any of you.”

Today they were leaving the castle tower and moving on to a cottage in Cork where they would spend the next few days.

Olivia glared at Lauren and then her boots. Lauren caught on quickly and moved over to her suitcase to swap them out for a pair of heels. She chose the red ones purposefully because they clashed with her outfit. It was her way of rebelling against Olivia’s control. She was completely, entirely, pissed off.

Until Julia entered the room. Lauren could not imagine anyone in this world that she would rather spend time with than Julia. Seeing Julia, was like seeing her best friend. She knew, no matter how the day played out, that she would have an absolute blast because she would be spending the day with her. A smile took over Lauren’s face that stayed there for the good part of an hour.

After saying goodbye to Gypsy and the other horses, the five of them piled into their rental car. Jared was driving and Olivia was sitting shotgun. That left Amanda, Lauren and Julia to cram into the back seat. Julia took the middle spot, and truth be told, much of Lauren’s space as well. She draped her leg over Lauren’s. Apparently, she was not holding back in front of Amanda. So, Lauren decided she wouldn’t either. She boldly placed her hand on Julia’s thigh.

An hour into their drive, Olivia and Amanda were both sound asleep. Julia and Lauren continued to try to scoot closer and closer to each other.

“Do you remember when you asked if you could see my work?”

Lauren turned her head to look at Julia. “I do.”

“Well, it isn’t really that simple. I haven’t been able to paint for the last seven years.” Julia spoke softly. She didn’t want to wake Olivia and Amanda.

“Why not?” Lauren immediately realized that it was not a good question. Clearly there wasn’t an easy answer. If there was, Julia would have fixed it already and been painting again.

Julia took a deep breath through her nose. “I’m not quite sure. It wasn’t an overnight thing. Like one minute I could paint and the next, I couldn’t. It was more of a slow process that took almost 3 years.”

Lauren looked out the window in thought. She wondered what started it all.

“It was agony, slowly feeling the artist in me die,” Julia whispered. “And I do not know if I will ever get it back.”

“Is there anything I can do?” Lauren knew the answer was no, but she desperately wanted to make a difference. Maybe the surprise she had planned for Julia would help.

They arrived at Blarney Castle shortly after noon. A heavy rain storm had just blown through clearing out all of the tourists.
